Horrordle is a game.

You might find the mechanics familiar if you play these types of things: guess the word, a yellow letter means correct letter in the wrong place, a red letter means correct letter in the right place. But Horrordle is also a journey through horror cinema. Each day presents a new 5-letter word to solve, and each word attaches to a new film. You can solve the word using logic, but 5 wrong guesses will trigger a hint.

“Amity’s chief insists there is another one out there, and the teenagers have already sailed out.” It’s the skiff, of course, from Jaws 2 (1978).

“Two warehouse workers puncture an army drum, and the gas inside sets the dead walking and shouting for brains.” It’s the toxin in The Return of the Living Dead (1985).

It’s not just the hits, though. Play long enough and you’re sure to encounter something new. One game might hand you The Golem, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, or Nosferatu; the next, a Japanese folk horror from the sixties (Onibaba, Kwaidan), a Korean ghost story built on a Joseon folktale (A Tale of Two Sisters), an Iranian haunting set during the missile raids (Under the Shadow), a Mexican fairy tale about children orphaned by the cartels (Tigers Are Not Afraid), or an Indian folk horror about a god at the bottom of a well (Tumbbad).

Miss a day and it isn’t gone. A calendar in the game shows every puzzle since the run began, and any day you haven’t played is still playable — the film attached to it along with it. Those catch-up games are marked as such and deliberately don’t count towards streaks or statistics, so the daily run stays a daily run.

The word turns over at each player’s own local midnight rather than on one global clock, so everyone gets the same word on a given date without reaching it at the same moment. A grid can arrive from a friend who is already hours into a puzzle you haven’t started.

Every film that has already come round is listed on the answer archive, with the word, the clue that ran with it and a link to the film’s entry on the Codex. A day only appears there once it has finished everywhere in the world, so it can never spoil a puzzle someone is still playing.

It’s free, there are no ads, and you don’t need an account — signing in only exists so your streak follows you between devices. Analytics are cookieless and count totals rather than people; what that means in detail is on the privacy page.

Living Dead Co.

Living Dead Co. is the umbrella for Jon Cole’s horror projects. The other one is Horror Codex, a searchable database of horror film. Every answer in Horrordle links out to that film’s entry there, which is where the two projects meet: the game is a way of walking into the database one film at a time.
